DELAWARE OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY

Engineering the website tools that foster safer driving.

To continue helping the Delaware Office of Highway Safety reduce crashes, we are creating interactive tools for the Office’s award-winning website, ArriveAliveDE.com. These tools increase engagement, especially with younger target audiences (ages 16 to 34), who are most likely to be involved in alcohol-related fatal crashes.

WHEN YOU DRIVE DRUNK, YOU’RE NOT ALL THERE

We imagined a new way to better inform young drivers of alcohol’s effects and increased website visits by 566%. Using an image-mapping JavaScript library, we created an interactive photo with clickable “body zones.”  Upon click and rollover, visitors can learn more about alcohol impairment. A Spanish language plug-in was added, extending the accessibility of the experience.

INTERACTIVE HEAT MAP OF DUI CRASHES

This interactive heat map allows users to explore Delaware, zooming in and out to see where the most drugged and drunk crashes occurred over a five-year average. We used LeafletJS to create the statewide map with custom coloring and styled layers, and overlaid it with coordinate data provided by the State.

A SOBER REALITY – IMPAIRED DRIVING SIMULATOR

To mimic the effects of drunk driving, we configured an overlay on a driving video using a popular JavaScript 3D library. Users can toggle back and forth between “Sober” and “Impaired” to see how the view may change for a driver under the influence of alcohol.

BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION GAUGE

To present the effects of alcohol at different BAC levels, we created a scrolling tool using JavaScript to produce smooth animations with each scroll of the wheel. Users move up and down from 0.02% to 0.15% to reveal the different ways alcohol impacts the body.
